A campaign called “Summer Without Fear” has been started by an Alliance for Immigrants Rights for the summer long. It’s goal is to try shedding as much light as possible on the racial profiling of immigrants and minorities in Michigan by the border patrol.

AIR’s training session last Saturday had 70 participants showing up from all areas gathering volunteers to educate the public to their rights. Once they hit 200 participants, they’re going to speak at community centers, mosques, and churches as well as door-to-door shedding light on all the numbers of cases classified as racial profiling.

Arabs and Latinos are only part of the minority groups that get targeted by border patrol abuse.

“We see this as a pattern of abuse by homeland security. When people are targeting others based on their race and religion and asking them what mosque they go to, they are engaging in serious civil rights violations,” Ryan Bates, Director of AIR said

Clark Park in Southwest Detroit will be holding a campaign dedicated to border patrol harassment on Saturday. The rally will consist of volunteers and groups such as The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) who will be providing campaigns of specific cases in which the border patrol has harassed Muslims.

“We know there are problems at the border with human trafficking and drug smuggling and they should be using their resources to tackle those issues and not harass innocent Muslims who are trying to get by,” said Bates.

The campaign is also working with the Detroit Coalition against Police Brutality, which is an activist group speaking out towards police abusing civilian rights. They provide cases such as warrant-less illegal searches, intimidation, and racial profiling while driving.
